SU Loses to Miami, 4-2, in BIG EAST Opener

The Orangewomen fell behind 2-0 early in the first half on goals from Britney Butcher at 1:41 and Lisa Gomez at 16:39. The Hurricanes out shot SU 9-2 in the first half with the Orangewomen failing to put a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
Syracuse would rally in the second half as sophomore forward Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) notched her fourth goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Graduate forward Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) picked up an assist on the play. Junior forward Annie Turner (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy) tied the game at 2-2 in the 81st minute with an assist going to senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional).
The Hurricanes would end any hopes of a 'Cuse victory with an unassisted goal by Allison McWhinney at 85:12. Gitana Gotay added an insurance goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation for the 4-2 final. It was Syracuse?s first loss to Miami in the all-time series.
"Miami is a much-improved team," SU head coach April Kater said. "They played consistent and well throughout the game, but our team is going to bounce back."
Miami out shot Syracuse 23-11 in the game and allowed only four shots on goal. Freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) set a career-high with eight saves.
Syracuse (4-2-0 overall, 0-1 BIG EAST) will return home for a pair of BIG EAST games against Providence on Friday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m., and Boston College on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
