9/28/2001 8:19:58 PM | Women's Soccer
The Orangewomen did not score until less than 20 minutes remained in regulation. Senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) sifted through the Friar defense on a long run before finding Galas at the top left of the box, who lifted a shot over PC goalkeeper Caroline Haines at 71:38 for the 1-0 lead.
Reich finished the scoring at 78:44 when she headed a cross from graduate student Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) into the net. Junior Annie Turner (Aurora, Colo./ Colorado Academy) also earned an assist on the play.
SU outshot Providence, 17-7, and held a 13-3 advantage on corner kicks. Orange freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) posted her third shutout of the season and made three saves. Galas now leads Syracuse in scoring with 10 points on five goals. Haines stopped eight shots for the Friars.
The Orangewomen improved to 6-0 in the all-time series and have never given up a goal to the Friars.
With the victory, Syracuse evened its BIG EAST record at 1-1 in the Northeast Division and now stand at 5-2-0 overall. SU will conclude its weekend homestand against Boston College on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Eagles shut out SU, 2-0, last year at Chestnut Hill and own a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series.
