For the second-straight game, the Syracuse field hockey team tallied five goals, this time on its way to a 5-1 victory against Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. On Sept. 23, the Orangewomen defeated West Chester, 5-2. They are now 5-2 on the season.
Syracuse jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half behind a goal and three assists by senior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown). The offensive outburst moved her into ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 65 points (27 goals, 11 assists). She moved ahead of Heather Chase (1992-95) and Laura Fitzpatrick (1997-2000), who each registered 62 points during their tenures. Amy Weller (1994-98) sits four points ahead of Aronowicz in eighth place.
Red-shirt freshman forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) notched her fourth goal of the season just under three minutes into the contest. Senior forward Caylyn Dicruttalo sent a flat crossing pass across the goalmouth and Aronowicz touched it over to Guglieri who was cutting in from the left side with her stick down and ready.
Junior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown), SU's leading scorer, had two goals and an assist against the Red Raiders. Her first score came at the 24:51 mark of the first half and was set up for her on a penalty corner by her sister, Michelle, and Guglieri. Kristin took a few dribbles and sent the ball into the cage with a reverse-stick sweep. She tallied again a little more than six minutes later with a direct-corner hit from the top of the circle. Once again it was Michelle Aronowicz and Guglieri who got credit for the assists.
SU took a 4-0 lead when Michelle Aronowicz scored an unassisted goal, her third of the season, with 5:49 remaining in the period.
The Red Raiders avoided being shut out when Meredith Metcalf sent a shot from the top of the circle to the left post, just wide of SU goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). The Colgate goal was recorded with 2:07 left in the first half, which made the score 4-1 in Syracuse's favor at halftime.
Junior back Missy Grosman (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, scored her first collegiate goal, the game's only second-half marker, at 26:58. She found the back of the cage off a penalty corner opportunity, receiving a pass from Guglieri at the top of the circle and converting it into SU's 10th goal in two games.
Latsko started the game and made two saves before being replaced by sophomore goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Co./Colorado Academy), who made her first-ever appearance in a game for the Orange. She stood in cage for 21:27 of the second period, but was not needed to make a save as SU held the Red Raiders to just one shot in the entire second half.
Syracuse is next in action on Sunday, Sept. 30 at BIG EAST rival Boston College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. On Monday, Oct. 1, the Orangewomen will play at Fairfield beginning at 2 p.m.
