#23 Orangewomen Outlast BC in OT Thriller

The Orangewomen fell behind early as BC forward Sarah Rahko capitalized on a misplayed ball by the SU defense, slipping her shot past freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) for a 1-0 lead 2:28 into the game.
SU senior forward Molly Schmelzle (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) tied the game with 39 seconds remaining in the half as she converted a pass from graduate student Erin Parsons (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa). Senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pembroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) also earned an assist on the play.
The Eagles would take a 2-1 advantage with less than five minutes remaining in regulation when a shot by Kristen Goddard deflected off an SU defender past Myers. Parsons would tie the game at 2-2 at the 87:52 mark when she slid into the BC box and scored on an indirect kick from sophomore Courtney Spencer (Syracuse, N.Y./ Westhill).
Syracuse increased its offensive pressure in the overtime period, heading the ball off the post on two consecutive corner kicks. The third time proved to be the charm for SU, as Reich headed in a corner from senior co-captain Tracy Stalker (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) past BC keeper Elyse Meredith for the victory at 95:50.
SU is the only team to outshoot the Eagles this season, holding a 22-14 advantage in the game. Meredith had a career-high eight saves for the Eagles. The Orangewomen evened their all-time series with Eagles at 3-3, and improved to 4-0 at home this season.
With the victory, Syracuse is now 2-1 in the Northeast Division and 6-2-0 overall. BC dropped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the Division. SU will travel to Connecticut for a showdown with the 11th-ranked Huskies on Friday, Oct. 5.
