
Orangewomen Lose in Overtime, 75-71, at Miami

MIAMI, Fla. – The Syracuse women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped with a 75-71 overtime loss at Miami on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the Knight Sports Complex. The Orangewomen are now 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Hurricanes improved to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
The Orangewomen nearly pulled off their sixth come-from-behind victory of the season. Miami led 30-29 at the half, but used a 16-8 run to start the second half to extend their lead to nine points with 13:08 remaining in the game. Syracuse still trailed, 53-45, with 8:26 left in regulation, but ended the second half on a 16-8 run of its own to tie the score, 61-61, and force overtime. Sophomore Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./LaSalle) scored the game-tying bucket with 13.7 seconds remaining. Perry scored six of her career-best 19 points in final eight minutes of the game.
The Hurricanes never trailed in the overtime, scoring the first four points of the extra session. SU was able to cut the lead to, 66-65, but Miami came back with an 8-2 run to take a seven-point lead with 21 seconds left. The Hurricanes made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The Orangewomen also erased a 10-point deficit in the first half. Miami led 18-8 with 12:30 remaining in the opening half, but SU fought back to take a 29-28 lead with 30 seconds left in the half. Senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) scored 12 of Syracuse's final 19 first-half points. James totaled 15, including three three-pointers, of her 17 points in the first 20 minutes.
Along with Perry and James, sophomore guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) also scored in double figures with 19 points. She also led the squad with four assists. Sophomore center Chineze Nwagbo (Lanham-Seabrook, Md./Duval) paced SU on the boards with nine rebounds.
Miami's Shaquana Wilkins scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Wilkins scored 18 points in the second half and overtime. Chanivia Broussard also recorded a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Kathryn Fowler chipped in 10 points for the Hurricanes.
The Syracuse defense forced 27 turnovers, but the Hurricanes held a distinct advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Orangewomen, 57-36. Miami outscored SU, 24-4, on second-chance opportunities. The Orangewomen shot just 37.7 percent from the floor, including 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from behind the three-point line.
Syracuse has now lost 10 straight at the Knight Sports Complex. The game also marked the fourth time in the last five meetings between Miami and SU that the game was decided by four points or less.
The Orangewomen return home on Saturday, Jan. 19 to take on Georgetown. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Manley Field House.
