
SU Winning Streak Stopped By Tennessee, 66-62

KNOXVILLE, TN - Syracuse's seven-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday night as the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Orangemen, 66-62, in the Thompson-Boling Arena. SU slipped to 16-3,while the Volunteers increased their record to 7-9.
SU fought back from a 17-point halftime deficit, taking a 49-47 lead with 9:15 left in the game. The 26-7 Orangemen run was ignited by senior Preston Shumpert, who had 12 points in the spread. Shumpert scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half. A jumper by DeShaun Williams gave SU its final lead, 51-49, before Tennessee regained the advantage and held on to win.
Jenis Grinstaff led three Volunteers in double figures with 18 points. Marcus Haislip and Jon Higgins scored 15 and 11 points, respectively. Higgins also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, as Tennessee held a 49-27 edge on the boards.
Williams joined Shumpert in double figures with 18 points. Shumpert moved into 12th place on SU's all-time scoring list with 1566 career points. He passed Roosevelt Bouie and Todd Burgan, who each had 1560 points.
Syracuse returns to BIG EAST action on Tuesday, Jan. 19 when the Orange travel to face Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
