
Pitt Hands Orangemen Their Second Straight Loss, 72-57

PITTSBURGH, PA - Pittsburgh used a 25-rebound edge to beat Syracuse, 72-57, on Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers (17-3, 5-2 BIG EAST) handed the Orangemen (16-4, 5-1 BIG EAST) their second consecutive loss on the road and broke SU's eight-game winning streak at Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh controlled the boards in the game, outrebounding SU, 43-18. The Panthers also had a 22-0 advantage on second chance points, including 15 in the first half.
Pittsburgh led by as much as 12 in the first half, 34-22, before entering intermission ahead, 34-25. Syracuse came within seven points of the Panthers, 60-53, with 4:11 left in the game, but Pittsburgh sealed the win with a 12-4 final run.
Sophomore James Thues scored a career-high 15 points, and graduate student Billy Celuck had a season-high six points. Senior Preston Shumpert and junior DeShaun Williams continued their season-long streak of double-digit scoring with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Syracuse returns home to face Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
