Lady Dons End Orangewomen Winning Streak

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Despite a game-high nine rebounds and 13 points from senior forward Leaf Newman (Perris, Calif./Perris/Arizona State), the Syracuse University women’s basketball team lost to San Francisco, 61-56, on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Manley Field House. The loss snapped a four-game SU winning streak, leaving the team at 7-4. USF improved to 7-5 with the win.
SU took a 29-27 halftime lead on eight points and six rebounds from Newman. Senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./ Plymouth North), who came into the game with 894 career points, added seven points in the first half, becoming the 18th player in SU history to score 900 points in her career.
The teams battled evenly through the first 10 minutes of the second half, with the lead being exchanged 10 times. Trailing 46-45 with 9:14 remaining, USF guard Lindsey Huff hit a three-pointer for a 48-46 lead. Huff’s three started a 13-4 run for the Lady Dons, putting them ahead for good, 58-50, with only 1:48 remaining.
San Francisco forward Alicia Hernandez led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field. Corry Berger and Lindsey Huff each had 12 points. Lisa Whiteside led the Lady Dons with seven rebounds.
SU sophomore guard Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./ Catholic Central) netted 10 points and tied a career-high with 10 assists. It was McBride’s second career double-double. Sophomore forward Chineze Nwagbo (Lanham-Seabrook, Md./Duval Senior) and James added 12 points apiece.
Syracuse will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on BIG EAST foe Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 5. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
