WASHINGTON, DC - Host Georgetown outrebounded Syracuse by 25 and outscored the Orange from the foul line by 17 points in a 75-60 Hoya victory on Monday night in the MCI Center.
SU's record now stands at 17-5 overall and 6-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas increased their mark to 13-7 and 4-4 in conference play.
For the third consecutive road game the Orangemen were outrebounded by at least 20 caroms. SU had similar fates in road defeats at Tennesee on Jan. 19 and at Pittsburgh on Jan. 22 when wide rebound margins were too much to overcome.
On Monday night, Syracuse was also hampered by an injury to leading scorer and Wooden Award Nominee Preston Shumpert, who played only 19 minutes because of a right-eye injury.
In a closely played first half, SU tied the game for the sixth time, 25-25, on a DeShaun Williams' basket with 4:17 left before intermission. After the Hoyas rebuilt a small lead, a three by Shumpert brought SU within three, 31-28, with 1:55 left in the half. Three points by Mike Sweetney, who posted game-high numbers with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and a trey by Kevin Braswell put the Hoyas ahead at half, 37-30.
Georgetown scored four quick points to start off the second half for an 11-point lead, 41-30. After baskets by Williams and Kueth Duany, Syracuse was within seven, 41-34, before the Hoyas scored six unanswered points to build a permament double-digit margin, 47-34. GU increased its lead by as much as 23 before securing the triumph.
DeShaun Williams led the Orange in double figures with 13 points. Craig Forth and Duany each chipped in 10 points, and James Thues scored nine in his fourth start of the season.
