Sophomore forward Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) scored her third game-winning goal of the season, fourth overall, at the 69:01 mark as the Syracuse field hockey team defeated Providence, 2-1, at Coyne Field. The win keeps the Orangewomen's BIG EAST Tournament hopes alive.
Syracuse, the only team in the league to participate in all 13 conference tournaments, will host the event, Nov. 8-10. The Orangewomen won last year's BIG EAST regular season and conference championships.
Providence (8-9, 1-2) took a 1-0 lead at 21:02 of the first half. Stephanie Suehnholz pushed in a long rebound following a busted corner play. The Friars brought their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
PU owned momentum at the start of the second half. SU senior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown), last year's BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, finally was able to force two penalty corners for the Orangewomen. After a scrum broke out in front of the Providence goal, the Orangewomen were awarded a penalty stroke. Aronowicz deposited the ball into the lower left corner of the cage, past PU goalkeeper Meaghan Moran, at 57:32. The successful stroke tied the game at 1-1.
For Aronowicz, it marked her team-leading fifth goal of the season and 38th of her career. She moved into sole possession of fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list. With 87 career points, Aronowicz needs eight more to become Syracuse's all-time scoring leader. The team has five regular-season games remaining.
Syracuse is 9-6 on the season, 2-2 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Orangewomen host Dartmouth on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. They have one league game remaining, an Oct. 26th meeting with first-place Connecticut (2-0) in Storrs.
