Syracuse vs. Colgate
Wed., Oct. 23, 2002, 7 p.m., Coyne Field
Syracuse, N.Y.
The Orangewomen have won three games in a row and bring a 10-6 record into their game against Colgate. SU is fourth in the BIG EAST standings with a 2-2 league mark.
SU has defeated Pennsylvania (2-1 in penalty strokes), Providence (2-1) and Dartmouth (2-0) in its last three games.
This will mark the 21st meeting between Syracuse and Colgate in field hockey. The Orangewomen are 15-5 all-time against the Raiders. SU has won the past five meetings, including a 5-1 decision last season in Hamilton. The last time Colgate defeated Syracuse was a 3-2 decision at home in 1996.
Kathleen Parker is in her 25th season as head field hockey coach at Syracuse University. Her career record is 277-170-14, good for a winning percentage of .616. She ranks fifth among active Division I coaches in career victories. Last season, Parker earned her fourth BIG EAST Coach of the Year distinction and was selected as the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. She guided the Orangewomen to the conference championship and the NCAA quarterfinals.
Audrey Latsko is third in the nation in save percentage (.856) and ninth in goals against average (1.05), according to this week's national statistics. She leads BIG EAST goalkeepers in goals against average and shutouts (7). BC's Lauren Hill is second with a 1.07 goals against average.
The Orangewomen rank eighth in the country in scoring defense. SU is only allowing its opponents 1.05 goals per game.
Senior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz was named the BIG EAST co-Offensive Player of the Week. She scored two goals last week to help lead SU to victory. Both goals were scored off penalty strokes. She scored the game-tying goal in probably the most important game of the season against Providence last Friday. Her successful stroke against Dartmouth in the second half proved to be the game-winning score. Aronowicz leads the team in scoring with six goals and 13 points.
Aronowicz is tied for fourth on the school's all-time scoring list with 89 career points. She needs six more to become SU's all-time leading scorer.
Sophomores Lindsay Peirson and Ann-Marie Guglieri each scored goals last week.
Syracuse, the only team in The BIG EAST Conference to qualify for all 13 league tournaments, will host this year's event, Nov. 8-10. The Orangewomen won last year's BIG EAST regular season (5-0) and conference championships. SU defeated Rutgers in the semifinals and Villanova, 1-0, in the final. The Orangewomen did themselves a giant service last Friday by beating Providence. The Friars need to win their two remaining league games to get into the tournament.
The Orangewomen have one conference game remaining. They will play at first-place Connecticut (3-0) on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. Last season, Syracuse defeated the Huskies at home, 4-1.
