Junior linebacker Rich Scanlon (Oradell, N.J.) earned the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week Award for performance in SU’s victory against Rutgers. Scanlon recorded the first three sacks of his career, forced and recovered his first fumble of the season, and registered six tackles. Scanlon’s three sacks went for a combined loss of 27 yards against the Scarlet Knights. It was the eighth time in school history that someone recorded three sacks in a game. Dwight Freeney holds the program record of 4.5 sacks, set against Virginia Tech in 2000.
In 2002, Scanlon is sixth on the team in tackles with 41, including nine for a loss of 37 yards. He is tied for second on the team in tackles for a loss with Keeon Walker (Hoboken, N.J.) and Clifton Smith (Freeport, N.Y.). The trio is tied for 10th on the single-season list for tackles for a loss. Syracuse will play at Central Florida on Sat., Nov. 2. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Citrus Bowl. The Orangemen return home to host No. 3 Virginia Tech on Sat., Nov. 9. The game will begin at either Noon or 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on ABC or ESPN or ESPN2. Television is expected to confirm the game time on Sun., Nov. 3.
