McDonough Places Fourth at Nike Cup in the 200 IM

Junior Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) of the Syracuse University swimming and diving team placed fourth in the women's 200 individual medley at the prestigious Nike Cup at the University of North Carolina. The three-day championship-style meet began Thursday with 10 a.m. preliminary races, followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The Nike Cup will continue on this schedule through Saturday, Nov. 23.
At the end of the first night, the Orangemen were in seventh place (58 points) out of nine teams competing. The Orangewomen were 10th out of 10 teams after the first night of action with 38 points.
McDonough achieved an NCAA 'B' qualifying time in the 200 IM finals with a season-best time of 2:04.20. Diane Parker from East Carolina won the race in a time of 2:03.02, followed by UNC's Janna Turner (2:03.34) and Jessi Perruguet (2:04.12).
Sophomore Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif./Clayton Valley) turned in a top 10 finish in the men's 500 freestyle Thursday night. His time of 4:28.82 was good for 10th place.
Junior Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School) captured 11th place in the men's 50 freestyle (20.71). He was faster during the prelims with a season-best time of 20.59.
Rookies Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and Devon Ackroyd (Toronto, Ontario/Dunbarton) impressed at their first collegiate, championship-style meet. Wittich was 16th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.27. In the morning prelims she was faster with a personal-best time of 4:58.66. Ackroyd placed 17th in the men's 200 individual medley. He posted a personal-best time of 1:53.09 in the finals.
The Orangemen's relays were strong. The 400 medley relay team made up of freshmen Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep School), Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academy), Raymond and sophomore Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) captured seventh place with a time of 3:23.28. The foursome teamed up again in the 200 freestyle relay where they finished eighth with a time of 1:24.21.
