Eight Days to Tipoff: Orangewomen in the Zone

Last season's success can be largely credited to the implementation of the 2-3 zone. Traditionally, the Orangewomen played man-to-man defense, but last year Coach Marianna Freeman decided to utilize the team's quickness and speed by playing an aggressive zone.
"We forced teams to shoot a lot of three-pointers last season, but we didn’t rebound well out of the zone," Freeman said. "We got people to shoot the shot we wanted, but we didn't do a good job of stopping second efforts."
Even with a taller roster, the Orangewomen still plan on utilizing the 2-3 this season.
The Orangewomen open the season at Loudonville, N.Y. against Siena in the first round of the Preseason WNIT. It is SU's first-ever appearance in the 16-team event, which features 12 teams that made the 2002 postseason.
