SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Syracuse softball team ended its spring break trip with a 5-3 loss to 25th-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday, March 16 at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State. The Orangewomen are 10-9, while the Badgers are 14-6.
Syracuse went 4-2 in tournament play, advancing to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket. Their only losses in tournament play came versus ranked opponents (#7 California).
The Orangewomen got on the board in the top of the first when junior Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) led off the game with a home run. It was her second home run of the season and the first time in school history that the Orangewomen led off the game with a home run.
The Badgers scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the second inning. A bases loaded single by Erin Barnharst plated the first run. Kerry Hagen also drove in two runs in the inning.
Syracuse chipped away at the lead, tallying runs in the fourth and seventh. Freshman Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) drove in a run with a double in the top of the fourth. Syracuse loaded the bases in the seventh, but could only push home one run. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian) drew a bases loaded walk to force home the run. The game ended with the tying run on second base.
Holowich led the offense with three hits. Rose also had a pair of hits in the game. The rookie is now second on the team with six multi-hit games in her 19 starts.
Junior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) suffered the loss for SU. DiMaggio allowed only three hits and struck out nine in the losing effort. She is now 4-4 on the season. Katie Layne (6-1) was the winner, while Andrea Kirchenberg picked up her first save of the season.
The Orangewomen have a week off before opening BIG EAST play at home on Saturday, March 23 versus Seton Hall. The doubleheader gets underway at noon. SU will also host St. John's on Sunday, March 24 at noon.
