NEW YORK, NY - Senior Preston Shumpert scored 21 points in his final game as an Orangeman in Syracuse's 65-54 loss to Temple on March 28 in the consolation game of the National Invitation Tournament.
Temple jumped out to an early, 6-0 lead, before Syracuse responded with a 16-9 run that featured eight points by Shumpert. After the Owls regained the advantage, 21-18, Shumpert tallied a bucket and a free throw and freshman Hakim Warrick hit a layup to provide SU a two-point lead at the break.
Two driving scores from junior DeShaun Williams, sandwiched around a free throw by classmate Kueth Duany, pushed Syracuse ahead, 30-26. Temple answered with 15 straight points, with five from David Hawkins and four from Ron Rollerson. Although a jump shot by Duany and later a dunk from Warrick pulled the Orangemen within four points in both instances, SU was unable to get any closer.
Temple's Hawkins scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line. The Owls outscored Syracuse by 12 points at the foul line, converting 20-of-23 attempts from the charity stripe. SU managed an 8-for-21 effort.
DeShaun Williams and Hakim Warrick tallied 14 and 12 points for SU, respectively.
