
Orangewomen Lose Doubleheader to Providence

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team suffered its first home defeats of the season, losing both ends of a doubleheader to Providence, 5-3 and 3-2, at the SU Softball Stadium on Sunday, April 21. The Orangewomen are now 19-15 overall and 7-3 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars are 13-32-1 overall and 4-12 in the league.
Syracuse is now 6-2 at home this season. The game-one loss snapped a seven-game home winning streak for the Orangewomen, the longest in the three-year history of the program.
The Orangewomen led in both games, but were unable to close out the Friars. In the opener, Providence took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Jaclyn Treveloni and Ashlee Weatherford. SU came back to tie the game in the fourth inning. Junior Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) drove in both runs with a double to right field.
Syracuse took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Junior Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) led off the inning with a single. A throwing error after a fly ball moved Collins to third, and freshman catcher Katie Kaempfer (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza) delivered a single to score the run.
Providence won the game in the seventh inning with three runs. Cori Van Dusen drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a single down the right-field line. Weatherford drove in the last run of the game with another RBI single.
Freshman Taylor Petersen (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) suffered the loss in relief for Syracuse. She threw four and one-third innings and allowed all three runs in the seventh. Petersen struck out four and didn't walk a batter. She is 5-2 on the season.
Syracuse scored first in the second game, manufacturing a first-inning run. Junior Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) started the inning with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kaempfer. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian) got the RBI, executing a squeeze bunt.
The Orangewomen extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning. SU loaded the bases with a single and two walks. The run scored when the Providence third baseman couldn't handle a ground ball by freshman Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam).
Providence tied the game in the sixth inning. Weatherford drove in her third run of the day with a single and Sarah Morin followed with an RBI single. The Friars took the lead for good in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Jackie Karsnia.
Junior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) took the loss for SU, dropping her record to 7-6. She allowed three runs on seven hits in six and one-third innings. DiMaggio struck out five and walked three. Melissa Peterson was the winning pitcher in both games for the Friars. On the day, she allowed six runs in 14 innings. She struck out five and walked four.
Dunn led Syracuse at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two runs batted in. Park, Collins, Rose, Kaempfer and Holowich all had two hits. The Orangewomen also set a school doubleheader record with six stolen bases in the two games. Holowich, Rose and senior Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) each had two swipes.
Syracuse will play a non-conference doubleheader at Cornell on Wednesday, April 24. The games in Ithaca get underway at 3 p.m.
