VILLANOVA, Pa. ? The Syracuse softball team lost both ends of a BIG EAST doubleheader at Villanova on Saturday, April 27. The Wildcats won game one with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Robin Flier started the rally with a one-out single and a two-out stolen base. Sara Carlson hit a line drive that glanced off first baseman Cheryl Julicher's (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) glove, and Flier scored the game-winning run, hustling all the way from second.
Senior Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) took the loss for Syracuse, despite scattering seven hits in seven and two-thirds innings of work. Brown is now 7-9 on the season. She struck out four in the losing effort. Theresa Hornick was the winner for the Wildcats, improving to 21-6 on the season. She limited the Orangewomen to two hits, both by redshirt sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian). Hornick struck out two and walked two.
SU's best chance to score came in the top of the sixth. Park reached on an error that put her at second base with no one out. A sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) to third base, but the Orangewomen couldn't push across the run.
In game two, Villanova plated three runs in the bottom of the second, the first without hitting a ball out of the infield. Infield infield singles by Allison Wisniewski and Kristen Yauch and an error loaded the bases. Wisniewski scored the first run on a wild pitch. Sarah Wall drove in the second run with a single to right and Ricci Lugo plated a run with another infield hit. The Wildcats added insurance runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Wisniewski and in the sixth on a double steal.
Syracuse scored its only two runs of the day in the top of the third. Junior Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) led off with a double and scored on junior Christina Holowich's (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) double to the right-center field gap. After a sacrifice bunt moved Holowich to third, Park reached on a squeeze bunt to drive in the run.
The Orangewomen threatened in the seventh inning, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but SU did not score.

She is now 8-7 on the season. Shannon Williams was the winner to improve to 13-2. She held the Orangewomen to three hits and struck out six in six-plus innings.
