
Dunn Hits Two Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior designated player Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) hit a school-record two home runs and drove in four runs to lead the Syracuse softball team to a 8-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Rutgers on Monday, April 29. SU won the first game by a count of 6-0. The Orangewomen are now 22-18 overall and 9-5 in the BIG EAST. Rutgers is now 18-24 overall and 8-10 in the league.
Dunn now has a career-best four home runs this season. Her four runs batted in tied her own school-record for RBI in a game. Dunn also drove in four runs versus Cornell on April 24.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian) set the final score with a two-run home run in the sixth. It was Syracuse's fourth home run of the game, setting the school single-game record.
Freshman Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) got the Orangewomen on the board in the second game with a solo home run to lead off the second inning. It was her fourth RBI of the day and her second home run of the season. Dunn kept the rally going with a double. She moved to third on a hit by junior Kristin Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) and scored when junior Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) doubled to left-center field.
Dunn gave Syracuse a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth with her first home run of the game. She hit her second long ball in the fifth inning, a three-run shot in the fifth to put SU ahead 6-0. Dunn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the game. It was the first multi-home run game in Syracuse history.
Rutgers scored an unearned run in the fifth for the only tally of the day.
Rose had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the game. She had five hits in the doubleheader, tying the SU record for hits in a twin bill. Collins, Park, Holowich and freshman Katie Kaempfer (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza) each had two hits in the nightcap.
Junior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) earned the win for the Orangewomen, improving to 9-7. DiMaggio did not allow an earned run, scattering four hits and striking out four. Andria Koehler was the loser. She is now 7-9 for the season.
The Orangewomen scored in the first inning of the opener. Kaempfer hit her school-record 12th double of the season and moved to third on a Rutgers error. Rose drove in the run with a two-out single. Kaempfer scored the Orangewomen's second run in the fifth inning. She reached on an error and scored an a double by redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North).
Syracuse put the game away in the seventh with four runs. Julicher drove in two more runs when she doubled to right-center in the top of the seventh. Rose drove in two runs in the inning with a single to center. Six consecutive Orangewomen reached base in the inning on four hits and two walks.
Senior Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) was the winner for SU, improving to 8-9 on the season and 5-2 in the BIG EAST. Brown struck out a season-high 12 batters and scattered five hits in her fourth shutout of the season. Leah Black was the loser for Rutgers, dropping to 8-11 on the season.
Kaempfer led the offense in game one with three hits and two runs scored. She reached base all four times she batted. Julicher was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Rose had three hits and three RBI in the contest.
Syracuse returns home for another BIG EAST doubleheader on Tuesday, April 30 when they host St. John's. The first game gets underway at 1 p.m.
