Five men's varsity college lacrosse players have been chosen as finalists for the second annual Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded by The University Club of Washington, D.C.
Conor Gill (attack) from the University of Virginia, Kevin Cassese (midfield) from Duke, Georgetown's Steve Dusseau (attack/midfield), and Josh Cofffman (attack/midfield) and Mike Powell (attack) from Syracuse University were chosen from among 21 candidates selected for consideration throughout the season.
"What we have here are the five players the Tewaaraton coaches committee feels have established themselves as the best of the best over the course of the season," said Tewaaraton men's committee chairman Richie Moran. "Each of our overall candidates is a fantastic player, but these five are a step above the rest. We look forward to presenting one of these players with the second Tewaaraton Trophy."
The five finalists were selected from 21 candidates chosen throughout the season by the six-member Tewaaraton Trophy coaches committee. In addition to Moran, the committee includes University of Virginia coach Dom Starsia, Georgetown University coach Dave Urick, Harvard University coach Scott Anderson, CW Post College coach Tom Postel, and Middlebury College coach Erin Quinn.
A winner from the five finalists will be chosen in a ceremony at the University Club on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 with all ten male and female finalists and some of the biggest names in college lacrosse in attendance.
Sophomore attackman Michael Powell is leading the nation in scoring with 4.93 points per game. He is the owner of 144 career points (66 goals, 78 assists). Powell has never been shut out of a game. He has either scored a goal or had an assist in all 31 games of his career. He is already 11th on the school's career assist chart and needs 17 points to break in among SU's top 20 all-time leading point scorers.
Senior attackman Josh Coffman is SU's leading goal scorer (38). He is second on the team in scoring overall with a career-high 61 points. Coffman currently owns 187 career points (115 goals, 72 assists). His 115 goals place him 14th on the all-time goals ledger at SU.
