STORRS, Conn. - Syracuse University juniors Tim Adrian (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) and Aprelle Watkins (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS), and freshmen Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas/Port Isabel HS) and Jenna Grimaldi (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius HS), each earned All-BIG EAST honors at the 2002 BIG EAST Track & Field Championship at the University of Connecticut's George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex this weekend.
The Orangemen placed ninth with 36 points, while the Orangewomen were 10th with 38 points. The men finished 13th and the women 14th at last year's meet.
Adrian won the shot put and set a school record with a throw of 58-11 1/2. The mark eclipsed the precedent of 58-1, set by Roger Taylor in 1971. In addition, Adrian provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship and added a second BIG EAST Championship title to his trophy case. He won the 2001 BIG EAST discus title. Adrian also placed second this year in the discus, throwing 171.
In her best performance of the season, Grimaldi placed second in the high jump, clearing 5-10 3/4. She set a school record and provisionally qualified for nationals in the process. Diane DiPhillips set the previous school record in 1987, when she high-jumped 5-10.
Hernandez led the Orangewomen with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 48-4 1/4 and placed third in the hammer with a toss of 171-10. She also placed eighth in the discus with an effort of 143-3. Watkins finished third in triple jump with a distance of 41-8.
Select student-athletes from the men's and women's team will travel to the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., Friday and Saturday, May 10-11.
