Syracuse University student-athletes were selected to receive a Chancellor's Award for Public Service for the fifth-consecutive year. The award is given annually to Syracuse University students who exemplify the highest ideal of sustained, quality service to citizens in the community.
Student-Athlete Council President Chris Liwski, a member of the crew team, accepted the award on behalf of Syracuse's student-athletes.
SU student-athletes were involved in a number of community service projects throughout the 2001-02 academic year. In the past, members of the Orangemen and Orangewomen teams have participated in fundraisers for various national organizations. This year, however, student-athletes chose to donate more than $10,000 toward the United Way September 11th Fund.
Syracuse student-athletes were also involved with community causes. They distributed child-identification kits, visited with the Big Brother Association, volunteered for the Special Olympics and created a partnership with a local retirement home. In addition, the council used funds raised from previous events to donate a pool table to the Westcott Community Center, a refrigerator to the Ronald McDonald House and a digital camera to the Boys and Girls Club. This spring, student-athletes assisted in the cleanup of a local park and invited local children to Coyne Field to participate in a variety of athletic events.
The Orange were also supportive of educational initiatives in the Syracuse area. The student-athletes were involved in the Shooting for A's tutoring program, the Success By Six program and volunteered their time to speak and read to various school organizations.
Orangemen and Orangewomen teams have also been involved in a number of other projects, including clinics for physically and mentally handicapped children, raising money for Vera House, a local rehabilitation center for women and children, and decorating pumpkins with local youths.
