Syracuse Orangemen John Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) and Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y.) were voted the players of the year at their respective positions Friday, June 7, at the USILA All-America banquet in Baltimore. Powell received the Jack Turnbull Award for the second consecutive season, while Glatzel was the recipient of the William Schmeisser Award.
Glatzel was tabbed the Defenseman of the Year for the first time in his career when he was honored with the William Schmeisser Award. He is just the third player in Syracuse history to earn the accolade. Pat McCabe (1990) and Marshall Abrams (2000) were the first two Orangemen to win the distinction. Glatzel, a senior and two-time All-America First Team honoree, was also a member of the NCAA All-Tournament Team the past three seasons. This year, he finished second on the team with 65 groundballs. Glatzel served as team captain in 2001 and 2002.
The Turnbull Award goes to the Attackman of the Year in Division I lacrosse. It is the third consecutive season that the nation's top attackman has come out of Syracuse University. Powell, just a sophomore, led the Orangemen in scoring for the second-straight year. He totalled 84 points on 42 goals and 42 assists. His 4.94 points per game average was tops in the nation. In addition to the Turnbull Award, Powell received the second annual Tewaaraton Trophy. He was a first-team All-America selection and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
Syracuse (15-2) won its eighth NCAA championship on May 27, 2002, by defeating Princeton, 13-12, at Rutgers Stadium. The Orangemen closed the year with seven consecutive victories, including four one-goal wins down the stretch.
