GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Syracuse women's soccer team could not overcome a strong first half by 14th-ranked Florida, losing 2-0 in front of 1,492 at Percy Beard Stadium in the Gator Invitational on Friday night.
Florida scored both of its goals before halftime. Christine Rao tipped in a pass from Christine Johnson for the game-winning goal and 1-0 lead at 16:44. Monica Hoyles buried a cross from Crystal Frimpong at 42:35 for the final 2-0 score.
The SU defense and sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) strengthened in the second half to hold Florida scoreless in the final 45 minutes of play.
Syracuse (2-2-1) was outshot, 12-6, by Florida (3-2-0). Myers made a season-high six saves in net for Syracuse. Gator keeper Jordan Kellgren stopped three SU shots in the shutout.
The Orangewomen play Central Florida (4-1-0) on Sunday at 11 a.m in their second game of the tournament. The Golden Knights lost to Duke, 3-0, in the opening game of the tournament on Friday evening.
