
Orangemen Soccer Wins Third In A Row

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Guido Cristofori's (Fariport, N.Y./Fairport) goal in the 60th minute propelled the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory versus Adelphi on Saturday, September 14 at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. It was the Orangemen's third consecutive win, improving their record to 3-2 on the season. Adelphi is now 0-5.
The lone goal of the game came at the 59:24 mark when Cristofori picked up the rebound off a shot by junior Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown). It was the fourth straight game in which Cristofori has scored at least one point. He now has three goals and one assist for the season. It was Johnson's second assist of the season, and the third consecutive game in which he has gotten into the scoring column.
Freshman goalkeeperAlim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate)earned his second consecutive shutout without having to make a save. The Orangemen defense led by senior Eric Chapman (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and junior Chris Aloisi allowed Adelphi only seven shots, none of them on goal. Karim is the first SU freshman to record back-to-back shutouts since Josh McGibbon in October of 1994.
Syracuse outshot the Panthers, 24-7, and held and 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. The forward trio of Cristofori, Johnson and sophomore Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) combined for 21 of SU's 24 shot attempts.
Igor Yatsenko was the losing goalkeeper for the Panthers. He made nine saves in the game.
Syracuse will play its first ranked opponent of the season when Loyola (Md.) visits the Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, September 18 at 4 p.m. The Greyhounds, a 2001 NCAA Tournament participant, are ranked eighth in the nation in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25.
