The women's soccer team (2-4-1, 0-1-0) yielded two goals in the last five minutes of the first half against No. 13 Connecticut (6-1-1, 1-0-0) in a 3-0 loss at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Friday night. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) made 12 saves in the second half for SU in the first BIG EAST Northeast Division game of the season for both teams.
UConn defender Lauren Naida scored the game-winning goal at 40:45 with a shot from 20 yards out that eluded SU sophomore keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS). Brittany Barakat increased the Huskies' lead to 2-0 when she put a cross from Sarah Popper into the near right corner with two seconds remaining in the first half.
Kowalczyk spelled Myers in the second half and stopped 12 shots before Elisa Pirinen tallied her first goal of the season at 80:14. It was the highest save total for an Orangewoman since Katie Karlander stopped 12 shots against Colgate in the 2000 season. Myers finished with three saves.
Maria Yatrakis made three saves in net for the Huskies. Megan Jessee played 5:40 in goal to give Connecticut its second shutout in as many games.
UConn outshot Syracuse in the game, 24-5, including 13 shots on goal in the second half.
The Orangewomen will play host to undefeated BIG EAST Northeast foe St. John's (4-0-3, 1-0-0) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Soccer Stadium. The Red Storm defeated Providence, 2-1, on Friday night.
