VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Anne-Marie Lapalme (Granby, Quebec/John Abbott Prep) scored 2:40 into overtime as the women's soccer team handed Binghamton its first loss of the season, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Sybert (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prep) set up the golden goal when she found Lapalme 10 yards away from the Binghamton net with a pass from the left side. Lapalme beat Binghamton goalkeeper Lauren Cherry, providing the win for the Orangewomen with her second goal of the season.
Syracuse head coach April Kater credited the team's defensive effort in deciding the outcome of the game.
"Binghamton played hard. They were very organized in the second half," Kater said. "We really relied on our midfield and back line to win the game for us, and they did. Our defense played a great game."
Defense dominated the game, as neither team could score in regulation. Syracuse (2-1-1) limited the Bearcats (2-1-1) to three shots in the first half and only put two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play. Both offenses had their opportunities in the second half, forcing SU freshman keeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) and Cherry to make five saves apiece.
Kowalczyk posted her first career shutout and made one save in overtime, giving her six for the game. She improved to 2-0 on the season. Cherry made seven saves for the Bearcats.
The Orangewomen will play the final two games of its three-game road trip in Gainesville, Fla. this weekend. SU plays Florida at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 and Central Florida at noon on Sunday, Sept. 15.
