SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orangewomen basketball team will host Seton Hall on Tuesday, January 21 at 7 p.m. in Manley Field House. Guard Julie McBride is just three points shy of becoming only the fourth Syracuse junior to reach the 1,000-point career point mark. McBride would be the 15th Orangewoman to reach the millenium milestone.
The Orangewomen snapped a four-game losing streak with their win at #24/22 Boston College on Saturday. It was SU’s first conference win of the season and its first win versus a ranked team this season. The Orangewomen have now defeated at least one top-25 squad in each of the last three years.
McBride led the Orangewomen with a game-high 23 points. McBride sealed Syracuse’s win, hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute of the contest. She also handed out six assists and made one steal. Junior Shannon Perry chipped in with 19 points and eight rebounds despite playing just 29 minutes because of foul trouble. Sophomore Rochelle Coleman scored 15 points in the victory.
For the season, Perry is the Orangewomen’s leading scorer and rebounder. She is averaging a double-double of 17.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest. She has 10 double-doubles this season and has not gone consecutive games without recording double-digit points and rebounds. McBride is scoring at a 16.9 points per game clip, including 19.2 points a contest in conference play, and leads the team with a 6.6 assists per game average. Coleman is SU’s third-leading scorer (13.8 ppg), and junior April Jean is SU’s fourth player averaging in double figures with an even 10.0 points per contest.
The Pirates are 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. Seton Hall has lost its last two games to ranked teams by a combined 11 points. The Pirates suffered a 53-48 loss at home to Connecticut and a 58-52 road defeat at Villanova in their last game.
Charlene Thomas led Seton Hall versus the Wildcats with 16 points. She made 5-of-9 shots from the floor and connected on all six of her free throw opportunities. Leslie Ardon also scored in double figures with 13 points. Ardon and Thomas shared rebounding honors with seven each. The Pirates limited Villanova to just 40 percent shooting (21-of-52) and outrebounded the Wildcats, 30-21. Seton Hall led by eight points at halftime, 25-17.
For the season, Thomas is the Pirates’ leading scorer, averaging 13.3 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 boards per contest. Thomas is the only player on the roster scoring in double figures for the Pirates. Ardon is close at 9.6 points per game, while Monica Johnson and Cecilia Lindqvist are scoirng 8.9 and 8.4 points per game, respectively.
The Pirates lead the overall series with Syracuse, 24-16, including a 20-15 edge during BIG EAST regular-season play. The Orangewomen have won the last two games, however, including last year’s 59-56 thriller in South Orange.
