SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse women’s soccer team (8-4-0, 2-1-0 BIG EAST ) lost, 2-0, to the 20th-ranked Boston College Eagles in a BIG EAST Northeast Divison showdown on Friday at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. Boston College (9-1-2, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) got second half goals from Lauren Vanni and Heather Ferron to earn the victory.
It is the first division loss of the 2003 season for the Orangewomen, who entered the game tied with No. 8 Connecticut for the top spot in the Northeast portion of the conference with six points.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Kowalczykmade five saves for the Orangewomen and senior midfielder Anne Marie Lapalme paced the Syracuse offense with three shots.
Neither team could get much going offensively in the first half, as both squads battled for possession of the ball in the midfield. Syracuse’s best scoring chance came when it earned three-consecutive corner kicks midway through the session, but it couldn’t convert the opportunities.
The Eagles took a 1-0 advantage 2:02 into the second half when Lauren Fanni served one over Kowalczyk’s head after the SU keeper came out to play the loose ball. The shot bounced past a racing Maureen Tohidi, who retreated into the box but wasn’t able to stop it from going in the net. The score remained 1-0 for the next 9:38 when Kelly Lavery gained control of the ball in SU’s half of the field for the Eagles. She cut to the middle of the Orangewomen’s defense and slid a pass to Heather Ferron on the right side, who one-timed it home extending the Eagles lead to 2-0 at the 56:40 mark. Boston College slowed the pace of play for the remainder of the contest, controlling the ball and continuing to pressure the Orangewomen’s defense as time expired.
The Eagles outshot Syracuse 10-6 and also held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Kate Taylor stopped three shots for Boston College to earn the win.
It was the second-consecutive win for the Eagles against the Orangewomen. Boston College defeated SU, 1-0, last year and holds a 5-3 edge in the all-time series.
Syracuse will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 12 when it hosts Northeast Divsion rival Providence at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
