SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse women’s soccer team (8-4-1, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) battled BIG EAST Northeast Division rival Providence (5-5-3, 0-1-2) to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Sunday at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. The Orangewomen earned one point, putting them in first place in the Northeast division pending the outcome of the rest of Sunday’s BIG EAST matches.
Senior captain Anne-Marie Lapalme scored SU’s only goal of the contest. It was her fourth tally of the season and eighth as an Orangewoman. She is two goals shy of tying Erin Parsons and Shannon Russell for 10th on Syracuse’s career goals scored list.
The match was a defensive struggle for most of the first half, with both teams battling for possession of the ball in the midfield. With six minutes left in the first session, sophomore Brooke DeRosa played the ball across the field to senior Maureen Tohidi. Tohidi dribbled into the midfield and lobbed a long pass to Lapalme. Lapalme settled the ball and ripped a shot past Providence keeper Caroline Haines at 39:21 to give SU a 1-0 lead.
The Friars evened the score, 1-1, 8:21 into the second half, after Maura Robertson’s shot deflected off a Syracuse defender to Leah Vieira, who found the back of the net at the 53:21 mark. Syracuse ratcheted up the offensive pressure and launched 13 second-half shots, but could not take the lead. Providence Haines made five stops in the second half to keep the game knotted 1-1.
Syracuse had the best chance to win the game in overtime as it earned a corner kick midway through the first overtime session, but junior Natalie Galas’ attempt was snared by Haines. In the second overtime period the Orange created another scoring opportunity, but junior Stephanie Sybert' shot just missed high.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk made two saves in the contest for Syracuse, and Haines finished with seven stops for the Friars.
The Orangewomen outshot the Friars,18-9, and earned seven corner kicks to Providence’s four.
Syracuse will play the first of four consecutive road contests at Dartmouth on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
