The Lafayette College field hockey team had four different players score in a 4-3 non-conference matchup against Syracuse University at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Leopards jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead and held on despite being outscored by the Orangewomen, 2-1, in the second stanza.
Just 11:21 into the contest, Lafayette's Melissa Hoh used a reverse-stick sweep to score on SU goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy). Syracuse answered less than three minutes later when sophomore back Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) fired a penalty-corner shot into the cage off assists from senior Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and junior Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken).
The Leopards took a 2-1 lead a little more than a minute later when Emily Goldman scored off a rebound. Lafayette's leading scorer, Jennifer Stone (17 goals on the season), slapped in a shot at the 30:25 mark to put her team ahead, 3-1.
In the first half, Syracuse outshot Lafayette, 8-5, and had four trips to its penalty-corner formation, while Lafayette never attempted a single corner during the first 35 minutes.
In the second half, the Orangewomen closed the gap to 3-2, when Gettel carried the ball along the left baseline and converted her own rebound at 43:26.
Lafayette increased its margin back to two goals (4-2) when Jenna Bratz knocked in a loose ball that came off of Wagner's pads at 55:25.
Syracuse kept trying to mount an attack and just 17 seconds after Bratz's goal, freshman midfielder Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored her first career goal to pull the Orangewomen within one (4-3) with 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
For the game, SU held a 19-16 advantage in shots. Wagner finished with five saves, while Lafayette's Casey Devlin recorded seven stops.
Syracuse lost its second consecutive contest and is now 4-8 on the season. Lafayette improved to 8-6.
The Orangewomen will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 17, when they will be looking for their first BIG EAST Conference victory on the grass at Providence. On Oct. 19, Syracuse will play at Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
