
Orangewomen Lose To Dartmouth In Double Overtime

HANOVER, N.H. -- The Syracuse women’s soccer team (8-5-1, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) scored twice in the final 7:30 of regulation to force overtime, but came up short as Dartmouth (6-5-1, 3-0-0 Ivy League) defeated SU, 3-2, in double-overtime on Wednesday at Scully-Fahey Field.
Senior Anne-Marie Lapalme and junior Natalie Galas scored SU’s goals. Lapalme’s tally was her fifth in the last seven games and her ninth as an Orangewoman. She is now one goal shy of tying Shannon Russell (1996-97) and Erin Parsons (1997-99, 2001) for tenth all-time. Galas’ goal moved her into a tie with Molly Schmelzle (1998-2001 on the Orangwomen’s career goals scored list with 14. She also moved into a tie with Shanning for ninth with 35 career points.
Dartmouth scored at the 10:23 mark when Lea Kiefer beat SU keeper Emily Kowalczyk with a drive from the left side to take a 1-0 lead. The Big Green extended their advantage to 2-0 when Roxane Davis scored on a shot from the top of the box at 32:53.
Syracuse turned up the pressure in the second half outshooting Dartmouth 7-3. Lapalme got Syracuse on the scoreboard at the 72:30 mark with a high shot past Dartmouth keeper Anne Marbarger to cut the Big Green’s edge to 2-1. Junior Helen Fox earned her first career assist on the play. Lapalme picked up an assist of her own 3:30 later when she hit Galas on a cross, who headed the ball into the net to tie the game, 2-2, at 76:00.
With momentum on their side the Orangewomen kept attacking, outshooting the Big Green 4-1 in the first extra session, but Dartmouth’s defense kept Syracuse from tallying the game-winner. In the second overtime, Dartmouth’s Christina Ferraris connected with Lea Kiefer on a breakway and Kiefer scored 2:22 into the second extra session with a low shot past Shannon Myer, who replaced Kowalczyk in goal at halftime, to give the Big Green the victory.
Kowalczyk made one save and Myers made four stops for the Orangewomen, while Marbarger made nine saves to earn the win for the Big Green. The Orangewomen will play BIG EAST Northeast Divsion rival Miami on Sunday, Oct. 19 in Coral Gables, Fla. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
