The Syracuse varsity four finished second overall with a combined time of 33:09.79. Brown finished first with an overall time of 33:08.32. SU raced the 5,000 meter head race in 18:21.43. The Orange had the best sprint time of the field, 4:56.12.
In the open eight race, the Orangemen varsity eight placed seventh out of 26 crews with a time of 29:36.59. Syracuse's time in the head race was 16:13.28. It recorded a sprint time of 4:27.77, despite a bizarre start. Syracuse had to race the sprint by itself because the crew the Orange were paired with, Brown, got to the line late.
"I'm pretty happy with our performance overall," head coach Dave Reischman said. "We usually judge ourselves off of what Brown and Dartmouth do because they're in our league. Last year at this race, we were 25 seconds off of those crews. This year, we were only 10 seconds off. So we're further along at this point this year."
"We started with a good rhythm in the head race," said Kevin Boyle, the senior-most member of the varsity eight. "We were able to maintain the rhythm throughout the race. We did well compared with Dartmouth and Brown. We're pleased with how the results came out."
The combined times for both races were determined by tripling the sprint time and adding it to the head race time.
Syracuse next competes at the Head of the Charles on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-19, on the Charles River in Boston.
