No. 14 Boston University Defeats No. 15 Syracuse Varsity Eight in First Race of Spring Season
3/27/2004 12:54:46 PM | Men's Rowing
Racing was delayed for two-and-a-half hours due to fog and ice on the lake. The races were moved down the lake due to excessive ice on the regular course. When the men's varsity eight race began at 10:30, Syracuse started with a slight lead over BU. However, the Terriers overstroked SU the entire way, 35 strokes per minute to Syracuse's 32 over the body of the race. The Orangemen came on at the end, but Boston held on to win by a half-length, in a time of 5:51.21. Syracuse finished in 5:53.5.
"In general, I was pretty pleased with the racing," head coach Dave Reischman said. "I thought the varsity eight – I’m about as happy as I could be in a race where we lost and gave up a shirt. I thought the guys performed well and I thought they raced hard for the full 2K, and we look forward to racing BU again later in the season."
In the second men's race, SU's JV eight established a slight lead at the 500-meter mark of the 2K race. The Orangemen overstroked Boston, 36-35 strokes per minute, to take a half-length lead at the half-way point. Syracuse won by 1/4 length of open water in a time of 6:01.0, four seconds faster than BU.
"The JV I thought had an excellent day as well," Reischman said. "Again, I thought they raced hard all the way down the racecourse, and did the things that we asked of them."
In the freshman eight race, BU led by a length at the 500-meter mark. Syracuse pulled even with 500 meters to go and won by two seats in a time of 5:59.6. Boston finished in 6:00.8.
SU's freshman four finished second to the Terriers' second four. BU "B" finished in 6:55.1, Syracuse finished in 7:05.7, and BU "A" placed third in 7:31.2.
"The freshmen I think did a great job," Reischman said. "We were a length down 500 meters in, and they did a good job not panicking, sticking with it and getting themselves back on terms with 500 meters to go, and were able to pull it out and win by a couple seats."
Syracuse next competes at Rutgers for the Ten Eyck Cup on Saturday, April 10, in Piscataway, N.J.
