Sophomore back Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) tallied her first career hat trick and sophomore sweeper Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley) chipped in with a personal-best two goals as the Syracuse University field hockey team defeated Colgate, 5-1, at Tyler's Field.
In the first half, Lombard collected a loose ball in the circle and slapped it in the goal at the 14:17 mark. She scored her second goal with 1:02 remaining in the opening stanza off a rebound and SU led, 2-0, at halftime.
Sola got into the act early in the second period. She scored off a direct corner play with her patented blast from the top of the circle at 30:54. Seniors Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg) assisted.
Colgate (5-10) got on the scoreboard at the 26:14 mark when Kath Shelley scored off a pass from Kristen Merkle to pull the Raiders to within 3-1.
With 12:49 remaining in regulation, Sola converted a Lombard pass. It was her sixth goal of the season.
Lombard netted her third goal off a penalty corner pass from Meredith Gettel (Rehersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) with 11:28 remaining in the contest. Lombard's career-high seven points were the most for a Syracuse player since Kristin Aronowicz set the single-game school record with eight points (four goals) against Colgate in 2000. Lombard is now the Orangewomen's leading scorer this season with 19 points, including a team-high nine goals. Gettel is second with 18 points (six goals).
Three freshmen made their first career starts for SU. Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley), Meg Ricker (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) all helped set the tone for Syracuse early against the Raiders.
The Orangewomen outshot Colgate, 27-4, and had 16 penalty corners to the Raiders' six.
SU improves to 6-9 on the season and will next be in action at home on Sunday, Oct. 26, against Connecticut. The Orangewomen are 1-3 in the conference and are in a must-win situation against the Huskies in order to have a chance at making the BIG EAST Tournament on Nov. 7-9, at Boston College.
