
Orangewomen Lose at No. 14 Connecticut, 6-0

STORRS, Conn. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team (9-7-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) lost to BIG EAST Northeast Divsion foe Connecticut (10-4-3, 5-1-0 BIG EAST), 6-0 on Saturday at Morrone Stadium.
Sophomore keeper Emily Kowalczyk made three saves in the contest tying teammate Shannon Myers for sixth on SU’s single-season saves chart with 42 stops. Senior Anne-Marie Lapalme led the Orangewomen’s offense with two shots.
Connecticut’s Kristen Graczyk, the BIG EAST’s leading scorer, netted three of the Lady Huskies goals and assisted on two others for a total of eight points in the match.
Graczyk opened the scoring at the 25:45 mark of the first half when she beat Kowalczyk with a shot that deflected off the inside of the crossbar to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead. Jen Zieky netted the Lady Huskies second goal 5:19 later when she found the back of the net at 31:04 to extend Connecticut’s advantage to 2-0. Graczyk tallied her second goal of the match at 38:10 when she outran the Syracuse defense and converted the scoring chance to stretch the Lady Huskies’ lead to 3-0.
In the seocnd half, Jessica Gjertsen scored at the 58:24 mark off a pass from Gracczyk to give Connecticut a 4-0 edge. Jen Zieky knocked home her own rebound 6:32 later to give Connecticut a 5-0 lead at 64:56. Graczyk closed the scoring at 72:57 when she headed in a pass by Kathleen Frank.
The Lady Huskies outshot the Orangwomen 21-9 and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Connecticut keeper Erin Rice made four saves in 64:59 of work. Megan Jessee played the rest of the way for the Lady Huskies and made three stops.
The loss officially eliminated the Orangewomen from BIG EAST Tournament contention.
Syracuse will host No. 24 Princeton in its regular-season finale on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
