The football Orangemen try for their fifth straight home win on Saturday when they face the West Virginia Mountaineers at Noon at the Carrier Dome. The teams are competing for the Schwartzwalder Trophy, named after legendary coach Floyd "Ben" Schwartzwalder. Syracuse has a 5-4 overall record and a 2-3 mark in BIG EAST play. The Mountaineers are 6-4 overall, 4-1 in conference action.
Junior Walter Reyes gained 89 yards against Miami, giving him 1,055 yards in nine games this season. It is the second straight year that the tailback has gained more than 1,000 yards rushing. He is the third SU player to ever have consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. The Orange player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons was Joe Morris (1978 and 1979). Larry Csonka accomplished the feat in 1966 and 1967.
Syracuse will try to win back the Schwartzwalder Trophy. The Orangemen have won the trophy six times since it was awarded to the winning team in this matchup in 1993. SU kept the trophy in its showcase for three straight years from 1995 to 1998 and from 1999 to 2001. The legendary Floyd "Ben" Schwartzwalder coached the Orange from 1949-73, including leading the program to its only National Championship in 1959, and lettered in football at West Virginia from 1931-33.
Saturday is the 21st annual Salvation Army Dome Donation Day.
