
McBride Hits for 27 in Loss at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team lost an 82-62 decision at Cornell's Newman Arena on Saturday, December 20. The Big Red and the Orangewomen are both 3-4 so far this season.
SU senior guard Julie McBride led all scorers with 27 points, including 22 in the second half. McBride moved into fifth place on the Syracuse all-time scoring list with 1,305 points. Beth Record (1998-2001) previously held the fifth spot with 1,285 points. McBride shot 10-of-18 from the floor, including two three-pointers to extend her school-record streak to 35 games with at least one triple. McBride was also the Orangewomen's leading rebounder with six boards and led the team with two assists.
McBride was the only player in double figures for Syracuse. Freshman Lauren Kohn scored nine points. She did not make a three-pointer for the first time in heryoung career. Junior Sarah Wegrzynowicz and sophomore Tierra Jackson each had six points. Senior April Jean, playing in her first game of the season, made her only shot from the floor and hit a pair of free throws for five points in 15 minutes.
Cornell had four players in double figures led by Katie Romey's 23. Romey hit for 15 of her points in the second half. Karen Force scored 15 and handed out a game-high eight assists. Laruen Kilduff chipped in 14 points, while Tanya Karcic recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Syracuse shot a season-best 44-percent (22-for-50), but the Big Red hit 50.8 percent of their field goals (33-for-65), including 7-of-15 from three-point range. Cornell outrebounded Syracuse, 42-26, and forced the Orangewomen into 16 turnovers.
The Orangewomen held only lead for just 36 seconds in the contest (5-2, 10-9). The Big Red went on a 19-5 run during a seven-minute run to take a 28-15 advantage with 6:47 left in the half. The Orangewomen were able to trim the lead to 28-20, but Cornell extended its halftime lead to 38-24.
Cornell started the second half on a 19-7 spurt to take a 26-point lead, its largest of the game, with 12:23 left in the contest. McBride scored 13 of the Orangewomen's first 15 points of the half on a variety of driving layups and one three-pointer. Syracuse trimmed the lead down to 15 points, 66-51, with 6:43 left on a two free throws by McBride, but the Big Red stretched its advantage back to 22 and won the game by 20.
Syracuse has now lost 12 consecutive times when allowing at least 80 points. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Orangewomen against the Big Red.
SU takes a 10-day break for the holidays. Its next game is Tuesday, December 30 at #14/13 Colorado.
