
Orangewomen Lose Two In The Snow At Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Syracuse and Pittsburgh softball teams played through below-freezing temperatures and four snow delays finish its doubleheader on Sunday, March 30 at Trees Field. The Panthers won both games, 3-2 and 9-5. SU is now 7-15 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh is 16-14, 2-0.
Junior Rachel Park led the SU offense with five hits, including two doubles. Park was 3-for-4 in the opener. Senior Christina Holowich drove in three with a home run in the second game, while senior Julie Dunn had a total of three RBI. Sophomore Tanya Rose also homered in the nightcap.Â
Senior Tara DiMaggio took the loss for the Orangewomen in the first game, allowing three hits and four walks in two and two-thirds innings. She is now 5-7 on the season. Sophomore Taylor Petersen threw three and one-third innings of scoreless relief, striking out four. Nikki Gasti was the winner, striking out seven in the complete-game effort. Senior Haley Larsen was the losing pitcher in the nightcap. Larsen (1-3) allowed nine runs, five of them earned, in four and two-thirds innings, striking out two. Janelle Pepe was the winner for Pittsburgh.Â
Syracuse scored first in its first at-bat of game one. Dunn drove in a run with an RBI groundout. Pittsburgh tied it in the bottom of the second on a solo homer by Casey Pickard.Â
Dunn broke the tie in the top of the third with an RBI single to put SU ahead 2-1. The Panthers took the lead for good in the home half of the inning without the benefit of a hit. Four walks and a fielder's choice plated two runs to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead and the victory.Â
The Orangewomen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game two. Rose put SU ahead, 1-0, with a solo home run, her fourth of the season. Holowich did the rest of the damage with a three-run homer, her first of the season.Â
Pittsburgh cut the lead to 4-3 with three unearned runs in the bottom of the third. An error with the bases loaded allowed all three runners to cross the plate. The Panthers went ahead 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Jessica White and Ana Velazquez drove in runs. Tiffany White drove in two with a double in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-4 and Jessica Thomas followed with a double to increase the margin to 9-4. Â
Dunn made it 9-5 in the top of the seventh with an RBI single.Â
