
No. 4 Maryland Edges No. 7 Orangewomen, 8-7, In Overtime

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team scored two goals in overtime to hand No. 7 Syracuse its first loss of the season, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon at the UM Artifical Turf Facility.
The Terrapins remained undefeated on the season (4-0) and extended their winning record against the Orangewomen to 6-0. Syracuse now stands at 2-1 overall.
SU sophomore Monica Joines scored a career-high four goals. Junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer, a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, added two goals.
Junior Danielle Lillis scored her sixth goal of the season with 1:02 left in the first half of the overtime period to give SU a 7-6 advantage. Sophomore Jessica Torney tied the game (7-7) for Maryland at the 64:02 mark. Kelly Coppedge scored the game-winner with 0:57 left in the final overtime period and Maryland successfully ran out the clock.
Syracuse held a 4-2 halftime lead after Joines and Zimmer each recorded two tallies. Joines scored her two unassisted goals at the start of the game to give SU an early 2-0 lead.
Maryland took its first lead of the game, 6-5, after Delia Jones scored her second straight goal at the 58:21 mark. Joines scored her fourth goal of the game to tie the score, 6-6, at 49:03 and force overtime.
Maryland held the advantage in shots (25-12) and groundballs (27-15). Senior co-captain Carla Gigon made 13 saves in goal for the Orangewomen.
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, March 15, when it faces Georgetown at 1 p.m. in Washington, DC.
