PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Syracuse juniors Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) and Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./LaSalle) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second and Third Teams, respectively, at the league's annual awards banquet on Friday, March 7.
McBride is the first Orangewoman to earn second-team all-conference honors since Teakyta Barnes in 1997-98. McBride ranked in the top 20 in the BIG EAST in seven categories, including scoring (15.7), assists (6.4), steals (2.2) and three-point percentage (35.4). She became only the fourth SU junior to score 1,000 career points and is the only Orangewoman ever to record consecutive seasons with 400 points and 150 assists. McBride was a third-team All-BIG EAST pick last season.
Perry earned BIG EAST recognition for the first time since being named to the all-rookie team in 1999-2000. She was the Orangewomen's leading scorer and rebounder at 15.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, both among the top 10 in the league. She reached the 1,000-point mark and became the only player in Syracuse women's basketball history to amass 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists. She is on pace to become the first Orangewoman to average a double-double since Felisha Legette in 1985-86. Perry was a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week, marking the first time an Orangewoman has earned the award more than once in the same season since Chris Palombi in 1983-84.
Syracuse finished the regular season with a 10-17 overall mark and a 5-11 record in the BIG EAST. The Orangewomen begin play in the 2003 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 8 versus Miami at 6 p.m. SU is the 10th seed, while the Hurricanes are the 7th seed.
