SYRACUSE, NY -- Junior midfielder Michael Powell tallied four goals and three assists, including a first-half hat trick, to lead Syracuse (10-5) past Princeton (11-4), 15-5, in an NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinal at the Carrier Dome. The victory extended SU's streak of consecutive NCAA semifinal appearances to 21.
Syracuse will play the winner of Sunday's game between John Hopkins and Towson in next Saturday's NCAA semifinal in Baltimore. The Orangemen are the defending national champions.
The two squads were scoreless for the first seven minutes of play before the Orange began lighting up the scoreboard. Freshman attack Brian Crockett scored off a pass from Powell, and Powell tallied 1:24 later on a run at the left side of the Princeton cage.
Powell produced three goals and two assists to stake Syracuse to a 7-1 halftime lead. The Orangemen scored the last five goals of the half to build their lead.
Princeton got on the board when senior attack Sean Hartofilis found the net with 4:20 left in the first quarter but the Orangemen responded with seven straight goals and held the Tigers scoreless for the next 32:05 of play. In addition to Powell's work, senior attack Liam Banks had a goal and two assists, Crockett scored for the second time and senior attack Michael Springer closed out the scoring with a blistering shot from 10 yards out to put SU ahead 7-1.
Syracuse, which produced the first four scores of the second half, eventually accumulated nine unanswered goals to increase its advantage to 11-1. Springer started the third period with back-to-back goals, completing his hat trick in 16 minutes. The Orangemen answered each of Princeton's final four goals to maintain a comfortable advantage.
Powell's first goal was the 100th of his Syracuse career. During the course of the opening two periods he also moved into 11th on the SU career scoring list, passing Paul Gait who tallied 212 in his tenure. Powell's last goal with 1:45 remaining in the third period, was his 31st of the season.
Springer upped his season goal total to 35 with his four tallies. Banks, Crockett and junior attack Brian Nee finished with two goals each. Redshirt freshman Brett Bucktooth closed out the scoring with the first goal of his career. Banks and junior midfielder Sean Lindsay had three assists apiece.
Princeton's Hartofilis had three of his club's goals, including the 41st of his season. Sophomore attack Jason Donegar and senior midfielder Josh White had the other Tiger tallies.
Syracuse and Princeton had met in the NCAA championship game in each of the last three campaigns. Syracuse won the crown in 2000 and 2002 while Princeton earned the trophy in 2001. The Tigers had won a March 22 regular-season pairing with the Orangemen, 11-10.
