Orange Fall 1-0 to Colonials in the Shootout
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's ice hockey battled Robert Morris to a 2-2 tie through overtime but fell 1-0 in the shootout Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange earned a valuable point towards the Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) standings in the hard-fought contest.
Syracuse (8-11-3, 4-6-2 AHA) battled hard after a bounce back performance from Friday's 1-0 loss. Emma Gnade led the charge for the Orange as well as Heidi Knoll, who added her first goal of the season in the match.
Robert Morris (8-12-2, 6-6-2) secured two conference points when Alaina Giampietro scored the only successful shootout goal in the second round to give the Colonials the shootout win after both teams battled through 65 minutes of hockey.
How It Happened
- Syracuse jumped out to an early lead as Emma Gnade scored on the power play 8 minutes and 14 seconds into the first period. She was assisted by Jordan Blouin and Maya D'Arcy.
- Robert Morris responded late in the first period when Alexis Vrana tied it at 18:47, assisted by Thalia D'Elia and Jessica MacKinnon.
- The Colonials took their first lead at 16:49 of the second period when Giampietro scored with assists from Laura Eustace and Catriona Crarer.
- SU battled back in the third period when Knoll lit the lamp just 1:41 into the third, with assistance from Rylee McLeod and Jocelyn Fiala, to tie the game 2-2.
- After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout where Giampietro's second-round goal proved to be the difference.
Behind the Numbers
- Goalkeeper Ava Drabyk made 36 saves through overtime.
- Syracuse dominated the faceoff circle winning 40 of 64 draws. Nea Tervonen led the way with an impressive 21-6 record in the circles.
- D'Arcy led 'Cuse with nine shots on the evening.
- Syracuse outshot Robert Morris 44-38 for the game.
- The Orange blocked 12 shots defensively, led by Celia Wiegand's four blocks.
Up Next
The Orange will break for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 2 and 3 when they host Delaware at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the second and 3 p.m. for the third. Both games will be streamed on FloHockey.
