SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Nina Scalzo and sophomore newcomer Kristina Cristofori each recorded six points on two goals and two assists in SU’s 7-1 season-opening victory against Binghamton Friday night at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium.
The performance is a career-best for Scalzo, who notched five points against Colgate in 2001. Cristofori, a transfer from Monroe Community College playing in her first game for Syracuse, set the program standard for most points by an Orangewoman in her inaugural contest.
Junior Natalie Galas added a goal and an assist, while junior Shana Thomas, another Monroe Community College product scored her first goal as an Orangewoman.
Junior Stephanie Sybert opened the scoring when she netted a feed from Cristofori past Binghamton goalkeeper Kristie Bowers at 24:25. Galas gave SU a 2-0 lead when she knocked in a Scalzo shot that rebounded off the crossbar 8:27 later. After Scalzo beat three defenders and scored to extend SU’s lead to 3-0, Binghamton’s Danielle White closed the first half with a goal at the 43:12 mark.
Syracuse came out strong in the second half and outscored the Bearcats 4-0 in the session. Scalzo’s tally on a feed from Galas, and Cristofori’s back-to-back goals 3:57 apart, gave SU a 6-1 advantage at 57:22. Thomas capped the scoring by converting a Cristofori pass to give the Orangewomen the 7-1 win.
SU’s seven goals were one shy of the team record of eight the Orangewomen netted last season versus Robert Morris and in 1998 against Cornell. It’s also the most ever by SU in a season-opening game. The Orangewomen outshot the Bearcats 21-9.
Binghamton’s Tracy Kasmarcik tallied an assist on White’s goal and also recorded two shots.
Syracuse will travel to La Salle Monday, Sept. 1 in the first of four straight away contests. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
