
Orangemen Lose to Loyola in Overtime

GERMANTOWN, Md. - The Syracuse men's soccer team lost a 1-0 overtime decision to the Loyola College Greyhounds on Saturday, August 30 at the Germantown Soccerplex. It was the season-opening game for both schools.
Neither team could find the back of the net in regulation, but in the 99th minute, Loyola junior Kevin Nash scored the game-winning goal. Nash headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from Danny Wheelan.
Syracuse goalkeeper Alim Karim made six saves in the loss. Greg Peters was the winning keeper for the Greyhounds with five saves.
Loyola outshot the Orangemen, 14-8, while Syracuse held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
It is the sixth consecutive time the Orangemen have lost their season debut, dating back to a 1997 victory versus 25th-ranked Connecticut.
The Orangemen will play their first home game on Wednesday, September 3 versus Albany. Kickoff at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium is at 7 p.m. SU went 5-1-1 at home last season and has won four consecutive home openers.
