VILLANOVA, PA. – Senior Nina Scalzo scored both of SU’s goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Orangewomen lost their first game of the year, 3-2 to No. 21 Villanova Thursday.
The two tallies were the 21st and 22nd goals of Scalzo’s career. She is fourth on SU’s all-time goals scored list, three away from tying Jenna Szyluk for the third spot. She also leads the team this season with 11 points.
Scalzo gave the Orangewomen (3-1-0, 0-0-0) an early 1-0 lead when she forced the Wildcats (5-0-0, 0-0-0) into a penalty, then netted the ensuing penalty kick at 15:19. The goal was the first allowed by Wildcats’ goalkeeper Chrissy Dolan this season, but Villanova answered right back when Lindsey Finnegan tallied her first goal of the year 27 seconds later at the 15:46 mark. Megan Farmer gave the Villaova a 2-1 advantage when she knocked home a pass from Valerie Grow at 39:51. Scalzo struck again 1:59 later. The Wildcats turned the ball over and Scalzo bent a shot over Dolan’s head to knot the score, 2-2, at 41:50.
The game remained scoreless for the next 44:17 until Finnegan beat SU goalkeeper Shannon Myers to the ball and scored the game-winner at 86:07.
Scalzo’s tally was SU’s first goal off a penalty kick since Erica Mastrogiacomo converted a penalty-kick chance versus Robert Morris last season. Finnegan’s first goal snapped Myers’ scoreless streak at 243:07.
Finnegan led the Wildcats with four points and Dolan posted four saves to earn the victory.
Syracuse will play at head coach April Kater’s alma mater, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Sept. 14th at 3 p.m.
