Syracuse Shuts Out Massachusetts, 1-0

AMHERST, MASS. – Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk made her first appearance of the 2003 season, and recorded a save as Syracuse defeated Massachusetts, 1-0, at Rudd Field on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Kowalczyk, who hasn’t played since SU’s 3-1 victory versus Pittsburgh in 2002, logged 90:00 minutes against the Minutewomen (2-1-1, 1-0-0 Atlantic 10) to earn her second career shutout. She is fourth all-time at SU with 68 saves and owns a .747 career save percentage, the fifth-best mark in program history.
The game remained scoreless until senior Nina Scalzo beat Massachusetts goalkeeper Kelly Nigh at 33:39. It was fifth goal of the year for Scalzo, who leads the team with five tallies, and also leads the squad with 13 points. Freshman Molly McManus recorded an assist on the play, to earn her first collegiate point.
Syracuse (4-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) played solid defense in the contest, giving up just two shots and the offense outshot the Minutewomen 25-2. The Orangewomen also held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Syracus head coach April Kater, who competed for Massachusetts from 1987-91 and earned All-American honors three times, is now 2-0-1 versus her alma mater.
Nigh recorded seven saves for Massachusetts.
The Orangewomen will return home on Friday, Sept. 19 for a 4 p.m. contest against Georgetown.
