9/6/2003 6:43:46 PM | Field Hockey
The Syracuse field hockey team lost a 6-1 decision to the University of Iowa in Durham, New Hampshire. After scoring only one goal in its first two games, the Hawkeyes (1-2) peppered the Syracuse defense with 18 shots.
Iowa freshman Heather Schnepf opened the scoring just 6:26 into the game by knocking the ball into the cage on a wild flurry in front of the goal during a penalty corner. It was Schnepf’s second-career shot on goal.
Eight minutes later, the Orangewomen tied things up with a goal from Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa.) (her second of the season) on a penalty corner. From then on, it was all Iowa.
The Hawkeyes rattled off five unanswered goals against the Orangwoman defense.
Seniors Pattie Gillern and Linsay Miller each scored within three minutes of each other, to give Iowa a 3-1 lead, then junior Margot McMahon added her first goal of the season to give Iowa a three-goal lead heading into the half.
The second half was more of the same for Iowa, and Gillern picked up her second goal of the game on an assist from Jess Zosky twenty minutes into the frame. Freshman Kara Zappone ended the scoring with her first-career goal at the 61:55 mark.
Syracuse returns home to play its first game at Coyne Field this year when it hosts Albany at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
