
McBride Sets Assist Record in Loss to West Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse senior guard Julie McBride became the Orangewomen's all-time assist leader in a 69-57 loss to West Virginia at Manley Field House on Saturday, January 24. The Mountaineers are 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the league.
McBride had seven assists to run her career total to 534, passing Raquel Nurse's previous mark of 530. McBride was also Syracuse's high-scorer with 19 points. She added five rebounds and a steal. McBride made five of eight free throws passing Sue Ludwig to place herself at second in career free throws made with 309. She needs just 10 more from the foul line to replace Shannon Perry as the all-time leader.
Junior Chineze Nwagbo scored in double figures for the seventh straight game and recorded a double-double of 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Nwagbo leads SU with eight career double-doubles including five this season. She has had four double-doubles in the Orangewomen's six league games. Junior guard Rochelle Coleman recorded nine points and 6 rebounds.
Meg Bulger led the Mountaineers in scoring and on the boards with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sherell Sowho and Yolanda Paige also scored in double-digits with 14 and 13 points respectively. Paige led the team with nine assists and three steals.
After a West Virginia three-pointer started the scoring, the Orangewomen went on an eight-point run to take an 8-3 lead with 17:27 on the clock. The Mountaineers responded to take a 19-17 advantage with 10:26 left in the first half. West Virginia extended its lead to as many as 12 points in the opening stanza, 31-19, with 5:535 left in the half. SU was able to close within 10 at the half, 39-29. The Mountaineers shot 55.2 percent in the first half, including 50 percent from three-point range (7-for-14).
The Orangewomen started the second half on a 12-4 spurt to cut the Mountaineer lead to 43-41 with 14:26 left. WVU pushed its lead back to eight points, but SU closed the gap to two points with a six-point run to bring the score to 54-52 with 5:37 left to play. Syracuse would get no closer as West Virginia finished the game on a 15-5 run.
The Orangewomen will next play on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Villanova.
