No. 15 Notre Dame Tops Orange in Double Overtime

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Ian Etherington’s goal in the 103rd minute lifted 15th-ranked Notre Dame to a 1-0 double-overtime victory versus Syracuse in BIG EAST men’s soccer action at Alumni Field on Sunday, Oct. 10. Syracuse is now 2-8-0 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play, while the Fighting Irish improved to 9-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the league.
Etherington’s goal, his second of the season, came 2:41 into the second overtime. After a Syracuse foul, Etherington bounced the ensuing free kick through the box and into the right side of the goal for the game-winner.
Syracuse goalkeeper Alim Karim made a season-best even saves in the loss. He now has 167 stops for his career, moving him into eighth place on the Orange’s all-time saves list. Chris Sawyer made two saves in net for Notre Dame.
The Fighting Irish outshot the Orange, 25-6, and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams committed 16 fouls.
The loss was SU’s fifth 1-0 defeat of the season, and the 12th straight Syracuse game decided by one goal. It was the Orange’s third straight loss at Notre Dame and sixth straight game against the Fighting Irish without a victory (0-5-1). Syracuse has lost five straight outings.
Syracuse plays its final non-conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 13 versus No. 21 Hartwick. Kickoff at the SU Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m. The game is the second of a doubleheader with the Orange women’s team. SU hosts Cornell at 5:30 p.m.
